Artificial Superintelligence refers to a hypothetical AI that not only matches human-level intelligence (AGI) but surpasses the cognitive capacity of all humans combined — across every dimension: creativity, strategic thinking, social understanding, and scientific reasoning. The concept was rigorously formalized by philosopher Nick Bostrom in 'Superintelligence' (2014), and remains central to long-term AI risk discussions.
The central challenge in reasoning about ASI is that its behavior and consequences may be fundamentally incomprehensible to human minds. By definition, a superintelligent system would be better at understanding itself than we are at understanding it. This creates a 'control problem': how do you align, constrain, or guide a system that outthinks every human who tries to do so?
Most serious researchers treat ASI as a long-horizon possibility — decades or centuries away — rather than an immediate concern. However, because the stakes are potentially civilization-altering, some argue it warrants serious attention now. The field of AI Safety is largely motivated by the desire to solve the alignment problem before ASI becomes technically feasible.
ASI is the theoretical ceiling of AI development — intelligence so far beyond human capacity that its goals, decisions, and consequences may be impossible for us to predict, control, or fully understand.
